Bombers Pelham 55 Leather Mullen
The Pelham 55 has attachments for two reins, one near the mouthpiece and one at the end of the shank. These reins have similar action to the curb and bridoon reins in the double bridle. Some riders may prefer to use rein connectors instead, which are leather loops connecting one ring to the other on the bit shank. The rein is then attached to this rounding. The Pelham 55 has the shortest shank of the Bombers' range and will exert moderate poll pressure and leverage on the mouthpiece and curb.
The leather mullen mouthpiece is flexible, making it softer than the conventional steel mullen. It is also sometimes better accepted by the horse as it provides a natural, malleable surface. Flexible mouthpieces such as this wrap around the horse's tongue and bars, helping the leather distribute the pressure evenly over the contour of the horse's mouth. This bit also suits horses that object to a metal mouthpiece.
This bit includes a curb chain and hooks. Care does need to be taken to ensure the bit is correctly looked after and the leather doesn't dry out and become cracked.
